In such works as “Less Than Zero” and “American Psycho” Bret Easton Ellis dissects contemporary American society, a culture in which too much is never enough. Now, adapting his own novel for the screen, he returns to the Los Angeles of the early 1980’s with a multi-strand narrative that balances a vast array of characters who represent both the top of the heap (a Hollywood dream merchant, a dissolute rock star, an aging newscaster) and the bottom (a voyeuristic doorman, an amoral ex-con). Connecting all his intertwining strands are the quintessential Ellis protagonists — a group of beautiful, blonde young men and women who sleep all day and party all night, doing drugs — and one another — with abandon, never realizing that they are dancing on the edge of a volcano.
A pair of teenage girls are brutally raped and terrorized by a vicious gang of psychopaths, who subsequently find their cruelty returned tenfold when they seek sanctuary in the home of one of the victim’s parents in this contemporary reworking of Wes Craven’s controversial 1972 shocker. Shortly after arriving at her family’s secluded lake house, Mari Collingwood (Sara Paxton) and her best friend are abducted by a sadistic prison escapee and his violent crew.
A family takes some very unusual steps to help their son in this documentary from filmmaker Michel Orion Scott. Rupert Isaacson and Kristen Neff first met when they were both traveling through India; Rupert was an activist representing the rights of indigenous peoples in the Third World, while Kristen was a college professor with a degree in psychology. While Rupert and Kristen expected that their nomadic life might change when they married and had a child, they weren’t quite prepared for what happened.
The creators of such docudramas as The Queen and Frost/Nixon re-team for this period sports chronicle, set in 1974. In England, the Leeds United players retain a status as the preeminent champions of their football league. Unfortunately, the manager to whom the team owes much of its success, visionary Don Revie (Colm Meaney), promptly leaves the unit to take over the England team. His replacement, the slick and confident Brian Clough (Michael Sheen), is publicly known as a vociferous critic of the team’s approach to games.
The last man in the universe is hunted down by a hybrid race known as the Nephilim… The Nephilim have managed to destroy all of humanity except for one man and one woman. The last man suddenly finds himself running from the Nephilim, who must be admired for their dedication to completing a job in its entirety, while trying to protect the last woman, who is, unfortunately, called a breeder. His Han Solo impressions will be enjoyed by sci-fi fans disappointed by Harrison Fords appointment with the natural aging process.
